What is Pothos Propagation?

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is one of the easiest houseplants to multiply. If you cut a piece of the vine below a node and put it in a jar of water, it will grow roots in a few weeks. Once the roots are a couple inches long, you can plant the cutting in soil to make a brand new plant.

Steps to Propagate a Pothos Cutting

  1. Cut a healthy vine about 4-6 inches long, just below a node (the little bump on the stem).
  2. Remove the leaf closest to the cut end so it will not sit in the water.
  3. Place the node end of the cutting into a jar of clean water.
  4. Set the jar in a spot with bright, indirect light.
  5. Change the water once a week and wait for roots to grow (usually 2-4 weeks).
  6. Once roots are 1-2 inches long, plant the cutting in potting soil.

Basic Care Tips

Light: Pothos likes bright, indirect light but can also survive in low light.

Water: Let the soil dry out a little between waterings. Do not overwater.

Soil: A regular potting mix with good drainage works fine.

Trimming: Trim long vines every so often to keep the plant full and bushy.
